Catalan, a Romance language, is named for its place of origin in the historical region of Catalonia in the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula and neighboring parts of what is now France. Catalan is the official and only language of Andorra, a European microstate, and is sometimes referred to as Valencian. Catalan has no official recognition in France. The Catalan language can trace its origins back to the Middle Ages to “Vulgar” Latin and from the Pyrenees mountains and valleys. Valencian enjoyed a period in history known as the Valencian Golden Age, wherein Valencian literature reached a peak output and notoriety, especially around 1407 A.D. Baby Name World has a small number of Catalan or “Valencian” baby names and name meanings and similar names may be found in our Latin and French categories.
