Fijian, an Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian family, is spoken in Fiji and has approximately 450,000 native speakers. There are also several thousand speakers in New Zealand. In 1997 Fiji established Fijian, English and Hindustani as its official languages. Standard Fijian is based on the Bau language, an East Fijian language. David Cargill (1809-1843) is credited with designing a system of writing Fijian based on the Latin alphabet. His pioneering spelling system has been used by Fijians ever since.
