Miwok, or Miwokan languages, are a group of endangered languages from the Native Americans of central California in the Sierra Nevada region. There are only a few dozen speakers living who still speak various dialects of Miwok. The most notable, Southern Sierra Miwok, comes from the Native American tribe called the Southern Sierra Miwok of Northern California. The Miwok languages are part of a larger language family known as the Penutian language stock. The name Miwok comes from the Sierra Miwok word miwwik meaning "people" or "Indians". Baby Name World has accumulated many Native American and Miwok baby names and name meanings in hopes of helping to preserve these indigenous languages.
