Mohawk, an Iroquoian language, is spoken by about 3,000 people of the Mohawk nation from northern and western New York in the United States and from southern Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Mohawk has the largest number of speakers still living, greater than a thousand, of all the Iroquoian languages. At Akwesasne, a Mohawk nation territory on the border of the U.S. and Canada, residents have started a language emersion school in hopes of reviving their language.
