Nepalese, or Nepali, is a language in the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. Nepalese is the official language and working language of Nepal, spoken in Myanmar, Bhutan and parts of India. (In India Nepalese is one of 23 official languages used and acknowledged by the Indian government.) Nepalese is usually written in the Devanagari script, along with Hindi and Sanskrit. In the 19th century Nepalese developed a significant body of literature and literary works by several native authors and expatriate writers outside of Nepal.
